How Many IP Addresses Are in Each Subnet?

A subnet is a block of consecutive IP addresses. Because the network, broadcast and gateway addresses are reserved in each block, the number of usable IPs is three less than the total.

What Are Additional IP Addresses Used For?

The single IP address that comes with a server is enough for most sites. In the cases below you need extra IPs or a subnet.

  • You run your own mail serverAn rDNS (PTR) record is set on your IP address so the mail you send is accepted.
  • You create virtual serversYou assign a separate IP address to each virtual server on your dedicated server.
  • You want to separate servicesYou can serve web, email and application traffic from different IP addresses.
  • You give IPs to your customersHosting and VDS sellers distribute the addresses in a subnet to customer accounts.
Uses of additional IP addresses: email sending, SSL, game servers, business projects and rDNS management
IPv4 subnet management: subnets from /29 to /24, usable IP counts, Whois and rDNS support

What Are rDNS and Whois Records?

Every subnet you rent comes with support for these two records.

  • rDNS (PTR) RecordA reverse DNS record that shows which domain an IP address belongs to. Mail providers mostly reject mail from IP addresses without a PTR record.
  • Whois RecordThe RIPE record showing who an IP block is assigned to. When the block is registered in your name, anyone querying it sees you as the user.
  • RIPE-Registered AddressesThe addresses appear in the records of RIPE NCC, which manages IP allocation in Europe and the Middle East; blocks of unclear origin are not used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Your Questions

Frequently asked questions about IP address rental, choosing an IPv4 subnet, rDNS (PTR) records and moving IPs.

What is IP address leasing and why is it needed?

IP address leasing is the allocation of a dedicated IPv4 or IPv6 address exclusively to your server or hosting account, not shared with other users. On shared hosting hundreds of sites may use the same IP, which creates blacklist risk and SEO issues. At Bogahost we lease clean IP addresses with no prior spam history and assign them quickly. A dedicated IP is especially recommended for email delivery, SSL setups, game servers and corporate projects.

How can I lease a dedicated IPv4 address from Bogahost?

You can place an instant order for the dedicated IPv4 add-on through the Bogahost client area or the order form on the website. After payment via iyzico or USDT, our systems team assigns the IP to your existing server or hosting plan within a short time. The IP is allocated from a clean, available block in our A-Class or C-Class pools. No downtime occurs during the process.

Can I also lease an IPv6 address?

Yes, the Bogahost infrastructure supports both IPv4 and IPv6, and you can lease IP addresses in either protocol. IPv6 is becoming increasingly important for next-generation servers and mobile apps as the IPv4 pool is exhausted. You can run a dual-stack configuration by assigning both IPv4 and IPv6 to the same server. IPv6 blocks (typically /64) are allocated based on customer needs.

What is the difference between A-Class and C-Class IPs?

IP classification refers to the size of the block the IP belongs to: A-Class covers a very wide range (e.g., /8), while C-Class represents smaller blocks (/24). Because Bogahost owns multiple A-Class and C-Class blocks, you can lease several IPs and pick each from a different block for your project. This is especially critical in scenarios that require separate classes such as SEO PBN structures, heavy email sending and game servers. When you specify your requirement, allocation is made from the appropriate block.

Is the IP I lease clean and checked against blacklists?

At Bogahost we routinely check IP addresses against major RBL lists such as Spamhaus, Barracuda and SpamCop before assignment. IPs that have been previously abused or have a spam history are not assigned to new customers. You can verify the blacklist status of the assigned IP in real time using tools like mxtoolbox.com. If an unexpected listing issue arises later, an IP swap can be performed upon your request.

Can I set up rDNS / PTR records?

Yes, you can request rDNS (reverse DNS) or PTR records for every dedicated IPv4 or IPv6 address leased from Bogahost. PTR records are crucial when running your own mail server so that providers like Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo do not mark your outgoing messages as spam. After opening a ticket to our support team, the rDNS record is usually configured on the same day. PTR can be set for IPv6 in the same way.

Is a dedicated IP required for an SSL certificate?

In the past a separate dedicated IP was required for every SSL certificate, but today all modern browsers support SNI (Server Name Indication) so SSL works fine over a shared IP in most cases. However, a dedicated IP is still recommended for specific compliance needs, legacy device support and high-security corporate projects. With Bogahost you can add a dedicated IP together with your SSL certificate from a single panel. Our support team evaluates the right scenario for you at no cost.

Can I have specific ports opened on the IP I lease?

Some ports (e.g., SMTP ports other than 25 and 465, certain game ports, P2P ports) may be closed by default on the Bogahost infrastructure for security reasons. To open additional ports on your leased IP, you need to submit a request through the ticket system. Our system administrators review the request based on your use case and applicable regulations and apply the change shortly after. Ports tied to abuse or spam may be closed again at any time.

Can I lease multiple IP addresses at the same time?

Yes, you can lease multiple dedicated IP addresses for the same server or hosting plan. This is particularly useful for multiple SSL setups, SEO PBN structures that require separate IPs, email IP rotation and game servers using different ports. You can specify the number of IPs you need during ordering, or add more IPs to an existing account later. Bogahost also offers special pricing on bulk IP orders for corporate clients.

Can my leased IP be moved to another server later?

Yes, provided you remain within the Bogahost infrastructure, your leased dedicated IP can be moved to a different hosting plan or VDS server. In that case some reconfiguration may be needed for rDNS, firewall rules and SSL bindings. When you submit a ticket, our systems team performs the migration in a planned, nearly seamless manner. Moving the IP to another hosting provider is generally not possible because IP allocation is tied to the registry of record.

Is IP leasing billed monthly or yearly?

At Bogahost, dedicated IP leasing is offered on both monthly and yearly billing cycles, and you can choose the term you prefer during ordering. Yearly payments come with a discount over monthly billing. Invoices are issued as e-Invoice/e-Archive through the Paraşüt integration and delivered to your account automatically. You can cancel the service at any time and, in line with our policy, receive a refund or credit for the remaining period.
