A WHOIS lookup lets you find out who a domain name is registered to, when it was registered, when it expires and which name servers it uses.
What Is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a public, distributed database protocol that holds domain name registration records. When a domain is registered, information such as the registrar, the creation and expiration dates, the domain status and the name servers (NS) is written to the WHOIS server of the relevant registry. Queries are traditionally made as plain text over port 43.
How Does It Work?
Our tool first looks at the domain's extension (TLD) and finds the authoritative WHOIS server for that extension via whois.iana.org. It then connects to the correct server and queries the domain. If the response contains a “Registrar WHOIS Server” referral, a second query is made to retrieve the most up-to-date and detailed record.
How Do You Use It?
- Enter the domain you want to look up in the form
example.com(no http:// or www required). - Click the Lookup button.
- Review the registration date, expiration date, registrar and name servers in the raw WHOIS output.
Tip: Since GDPR and similar privacy laws, many registrars redact personal contact details. This is normal; the technical records (dates, NS, status) are still visible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do WHOIS details appear hidden/“redacted”?
Due to GDPR, which took effect in 2018, and similar privacy regulations, most registrars hide personal data such as name, email and phone number from the WHOIS output. The domain's technical records can still be viewed.
Can I also look up extensions like .com.tr?
Yes. The tool automatically finds the authoritative WHOIS server for the extension. For some country extensions the output format may differ.
How do I see my domain's expiration date?
Look at the Registry Expiry Date or Expiration Date line in the output. To avoid missing your domain's renewal, you can enable auto-renew from the Bogahost domain panel.
